Background:

  • While effective, amiodarone carries a risk of significant side effects, including pulmonary toxicity.

Observation:

  • A 55-year-old male developed acute respiratory failure and diffuse lung opacities post-mitral valve replacement.
  • The patient had recently initiated amiodarone therapy.

Findings:

  • Diagnosis of amiodarone-induced pulmonary toxicity was confirmed by bronchoalveolar lavage revealing numerous foamy macrophages.
  • Cessation of amiodarone and initiation of corticosteroid therapy led to symptom improvement and enhanced arterial blood gases.
