Summary

Patients with essential tremor (ET) experience greater hearing disability than those with Parkinson disease (PD) or controls. This hearing impairment in ET is linked to tremor severity.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Audiology
  • Clinical Research

Background:

  • Essential tremor (ET) and Parkinson disease (PD) are common neurodegenerative disorders.
  • Hearing impairment is a potential but understudied comorbidity in ET.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare hearing disability in patients with ET versus PD and healthy controls.
  • To investigate factors associated with hearing loss in ET.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized the Nursing Home Hearing Handicap Index (NHHI) to assess hearing disability.
  • Collected demographic and clinical data from 250 ET patients, 127 PD patients, and 127 controls.
  • Performed audiologic evaluations on a subset of ET patients and used regression analysis for adjustments.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Patients with ET demonstrated significantly worse NHHI scores compared to PD patients and controls.
  • A higher proportion of ET patients used hearing aids.
  • In ET, hearing loss correlated with tremor severity and was associated with older age and male sex.

Conclusions:

  • Essential tremor is associated with increased hearing disability compared to Parkinson disease and normal controls.
  • Hearing impairment in ET is linked to tremor severity, suggesting a potential shared pathophysiology.
