Summary

This study investigated the link between age-related hearing loss (presbycusis) and mastoid pneumatization. Researchers found no significant difference in mastoid air cell volume between individuals with presbycusis and normal subjects.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore a potential relationship between presbycusis and the extent of mastoid pneumatization.
  • To compare mastoid pneumatization volumes in patients with presbycusis versus age-matched controls.

Main Methods:

  • Computed tomography (CT) scans were used to measure mastoid pneumatized volume in 21 presbycusis patients and 21 controls.
  • Scans of the temporal bone were performed at 2 mm intervals, parallel to the orbitomeatal line.

Conclusions:
