Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Biomaterials Science
  • Surgical Innovation

Context:

  • Ossicular chain reconstruction is crucial for hearing restoration in tympanoplasty.
  • Hydroxylapatite prostheses offer biocompatibility and structural integrity for ossicular replacement.

Purpose:

  • To evaluate hearing results of partial (PORP) and total ossicular replacement prostheses (TORP) with a hydroxylapatite head and trimmable shaft.
  • To assess the efficacy and efficiency of HAPEX prostheses in tympanoplasty type III.

Summary:

  • Retrospective analysis of 71 tympanoplasty type III patients using PORP (55) and TORP (16) prostheses.
  • Good hearing outcomes achieved: PORP cases reduced air-bone gap to <= 20 dB in 73% (mean improvement 28 to 17 dB); TORP cases in 62% (mean improvement 32 to 20 dB).
  • HAPEX prostheses demonstrated comparable hearing results to other synthetic materials and offered time-saving benefits due to the trimmable shaft.

Impact:

  • These findings support the use of hydroxylapatite prostheses with trimmable shafts for effective and efficient ossicular reconstruction.
  • The study highlights potential improvements in surgical workflow and patient hearing outcomes in otologic surgery.
