This study investigated the link between multiple sclerosis (MS) and celiac disease (CD). A small percentage of MS patients showed serologic markers for CD, suggesting a potential, though often nonspecific, association.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Immunology
  • Gastroenterology

Background:

  • Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurological disease.
  • Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune disorder triggered by gluten.
  • The potential overlap between MS and CD requires further investigation.

Observation:

  • Two patients presented with MS-like symptoms and underlying celiac disease.
  • A screening of 49 additional MS patients was conducted for serologic evidence of CD.

Findings:

  • One patient (2%) tested positive for IgA anti-endomysial antibodies, a specific marker for CD.
  • IgG anti-gliadin antibodies were detected in 12% of MS patients, a rate similar to blood donors (13%).
  • IgG anti-gliadin antibodies may not be a specific indicator for CD in MS patients.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Occult celiac disease may be present in some individuals with multiple sclerosis.
  • Further research is needed to clarify the relationship between MS and CD.
  • Consideration of CD screening in MS patients with specific serologic markers may be warranted.
