Sulfonamide antibiotics cause hypersensitivity reactions, but no diagnostic tests exist. Desensitization protocols can safely reintroduce sulfamethoxazole, even in HIV-infected patients, and cross-reactions with non-antibiotic sulfonamides are unlikely.
