Morphometric study of primary cutaneous germinal center cell lymphomas

Background:

• Primary cutaneous germinal center cell lymphomas (PCGCCL) are B-cell neoplasms with significant cellular pleomorphism.
• Histopathologic examination of mixed-cell-type PCGCCL exhibits poor interobserver reproducibility.
• The heterogeneity in cell size and nuclear morphology complicates accurate classification.

Purpose of the Study:

• To evaluate if morphometric analysis can substantiate light microscopic criteria for classifying cleaved and noncleaved cells in PCGCCL.
• To assess the reproducibility of morphometric analysis in differentiating cell subsets within these lymphomas.
• To determine the suitability of current classification systems for PCGCCL.

• Studied 17 cases of centroblastic/centrocytic and centroblastic follicular and/or diffuse primary cutaneous lymphomas.

• Considerable overlap in nuclear parameters between cell subtypes in cutaneous mixed lymphomas exists.
• The Kiel classification and Working Formulation are unsuitable for PCGCCL.
• Revision of classification criteria for cutaneous germinal center cell lymphomas is supported by these findings.
