Thyroid metastases from non-thyroid cancers are rare but can present as nodules. Surgical resection is recommended for isolated cases, despite a generally poor prognosis and short survival times.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Endocrinology
  • Surgical Pathology

Background:

  • Metastasis to the thyroid gland from non-thyroidal primary cancers is an uncommon event.
  • This retrospective study aimed to document cases of thyroid metastases and highlight their rarity and associated poor prognosis.

Observation:

  • Eleven patients with thyroidectomies for isolated, non-thyroidal metastases were analyzed (1987-1999).
  • The most frequent primary tumors were lung (5/11) and renal (2/11) cancers.
  • Clinical presentations included thyroid nodules, dysphonia, and dysphagia, without hormonal disturbances.

Findings:

  • Preoperative fine-needle aspiration correctly identified metastatic disease in 90% of cases.
  • The average time from primary tumor resection to thyroid metastasis was 25 months.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Surgical treatment (thyroidectomy or lobectomy) was performed without complications, and no neck recurrences were observed.
  • Median survival post-treatment was 10 months, with death primarily due to widespread metastases.
  • Implications:

    • Surgical resection of isolated thyroid metastases may help prevent local morbidity.
    • Despite surgical intervention, the overall prognosis for patients with thyroid metastases remains poor.
    • Further research into the management and outcomes of rare thyroid metastases is warranted.
