Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Allergology
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is a prevalent skin condition.
  • Accurate diagnosis relies on patch testing to identify specific allergens.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of positive patch tests in suspected ACD patients.
  • To identify common allergens in both International Standard Series (ISS) and Cosmetic Series (CSS) in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study involving 340 patients with suspected ACD.
  • Patch tests were conducted using ISS (250 patients) and CSS (90 patients) between January 2000 and December 2003.
  • Demographic data and allergen-specific reactions were recorded.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Overall patch test positivity was 50% for ISS and 72.22% for CSS.
  • In ISS, positive reactions were more common in males (56%), while CSS reactions were predominantly in females (90.77%).
  • Common ISS allergens included Potassium Dichromate (19.2%), Fragrance mix (17.6%), Nickel Sulphate (15.2%), and PPD (11.2%).
  • Common CSS allergens were Octyl Gallate (27.69%), Getrimide (18.92%), Balsum of Peru (15.38%), and Thiomersal (12.31%).
  • Highest incidence of positive ISS tests was in the 30-39 age group; for CSS, it was the 20-29 age group.

Conclusions:

  • Patch testing is effective in diagnosing ACD and identifying causative agents.
  • Specific allergens like Potassium Dichromate and Fragrance Mix (ISS) and Octyl Gallate and Getrimide (CSS) are significant triggers in this population.
  • Gender and age influence allergen prevalence in ACD.
