Summary

The regression-based discrepancy method (RDM) is invalid for detecting aptitude-achievement discrepancies due to statistical flaws. However, RDM may still measure achievement independent of intelligence.

Area of Science:

  • Educational Psychology
  • Psychometrics

Background:

  • The validity of the regression-based discrepancy method (RDM) for identifying aptitude-achievement discrepancies has been debated.
  • Willson and Reynolds presented counterarguments challenging the critique of RDM's validity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To address and refute the statistical and theoretical counterarguments regarding the regression-based discrepancy method (RDM).
  • To demonstrate the specific statistical mechanism that invalidates RDM for its intended purpose.

Main Methods:

  • Re-examination of the statistical models underpinning the regression-based discrepancy method (RDM).
  • Analysis of the impact of regression adjustment, particularly in relation to correlation strength.

Main Results:

  • Counterarguments by Willson and Reynolds were based on a misinterpretation of the statistical models.
  • The regression adjustment in RDM, especially pronounced with lower correlations, fundamentally undermines its validity for detecting aptitude-achievement discrepancies.

Conclusions:

  • The regression-based discrepancy method (RDM) is not a valid approach for detecting aptitude-achievement discrepancies.
  • RDM may retain validity for measuring the component of achievement that is independent of intelligence.
