[Association between bone mineral density of the general skeletons and jaw bones]
1Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology, Hiroshima University Dental Hospital.
Abstract:
Associations between bone mineral density (BMD) of the general skeletons and jaw bones have been investigated to clarify the influences of skeletal low BMD or osteoporosis on periodontitis and tooth loss, especially in women. Some studies reported the significant associations between general skeletal BMD and BMD (or bone mass) of the jaw bones, however, the others failed to find this association. It is likely that the differences in the methods and regions in measuring BMD (or bone mass) of the jaw bones and in study sample size may contribute to this contradiction. Further systematical investigation in the large populations would be necessary in cooperation with medical professionals.

Gross Anatomy of Bone
The diaphysis is the tubular shaft that runs between the proximal and distal ends of the bone. The walls of the diaphysis are composed of dense and hard compact bone made of numerous osteons — the functional unit of the compact bone. The hollow region in the diaphysis is called the medullary cavity, which harbors the bone marrow. In infants and children, this marrow cavity is filled with red marrow, whereas in adults, it...
The Bone Matrix
Compact Bone
Compact bone, also called cortical bone, is the denser, stronger of the two types of bone tissue. It is found under the periosteum and in the diaphyses of long bones, where it provides support and protection. The microscopic structural unit of compact bone is called an osteon, or haversian system. Each osteon is composed of concentric rings of calcified...
Bone Disorders
Bone deposition is also affected by the levels of sex hormones like estrogen and testosterone that promote osteoblast activity and bone matrix synthesis. When the level of these hormones decreases due to aging, it causes a reduction in bone deposition. As a result, bone resorption by osteoclasts...

Calcium and Phosphorus
Calcium is a critical component of bones, especially in the form of calcium phosphate and calcium carbonate. Since the body cannot make calcium, it must be obtained from the diet. However, calcium cannot be absorbed from the small intestine without...
