Area of Science:

  • Dental Materials Science
  • Polymer Chemistry
  • Biomaterials Engineering

Background:

  • Maximizing monomer conversion in photoactivated resin composites within the oral environment presents challenges.
  • Optimizing the curing process is crucial for the longevity and performance of dental restorations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effect of pre-heating resin composite on monomer conversion.
  • To determine if pre-heating can reduce the required light-curing duration while maintaining or improving conversion rates.

Main Methods:

  • Resin composite samples were heated to temperatures ranging from 3°C to 60°C before light-curing.
  • Samples were exposed to a quartz-tungsten-halogen curing unit for varying durations (5, 10, 20, 40 seconds).
  • Monomer conversion was quantified using infrared spectroscopy at the surface and at a 2mm depth.

Main Results:

  • A strong positive correlation was observed between composite temperature and monomer conversion (r² = 0.999 at the surface, r² = 0.998 at 2mm depth).
  • Monomer conversion increased from 31.6% at 3°C to 67.3% at 60°C.
  • Reducing light exposure by 50-75% with pre-heated composite resulted in equivalent or significantly higher conversion compared to room-temperature composite.

Conclusions:

  • Pre-heating dental resin composite before photoactivation significantly enhances monomer conversion.
  • This pre-heating method allows for reduced light-curing times without compromising material conversion, potentially improving clinical efficiency and restoration quality.
