Summary
Urachal sinus, a congenital anomaly causing umbilical discharge, requires ultrasound and fistulography for diagnosis. Surgical resection of the sinus and its bladder base is the standard treatment, with a low recurrence rate.
Area of Science:
- Urology
- Pediatric Surgery
- Medical Imaging
Background:
- Urachal sinus is a congenital anomaly resulting from incomplete urachus obliteration.
- It can manifest at any age with characteristic purulent umbilical discharge.
- Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial due to the risk of malignant transformation.
Observation:
- This study retrospectively analyzed 3 cases of urachal sinus in girls (mean age 12 years) with a 3-month history of discharge.
- Clinical findings included umbilical nodules or infraumbilical masses.
- Ultrasound and fistulography confirmed the diagnosis, revealing a blind cavity.
Findings:
- Complete sinus resection with bladder base excision was performed in 2 patients; one had sinus resection only.
- No malignancies were found histologically.
- One patient had an associated ovarian teratoma; all cases had uneventful postoperative courses with no recurrence at 12-month follow-up.
Implications:
- Purulent umbilical discharge warrants investigation for urachal sinus.
- Combined ultrasound and fistulography are effective diagnostic tools.
- Surgical management involving sinus and bladder base resection ensures favorable outcomes.

Urinary Tract Infection III: Diagnostic Studies and Interprofessional Care
A healthcare provider can diagnose a urinary tract infection (UTI) through several methods:Medical History and Symptoms: The provider will take a detailed medical history and ask about symptoms such as frequent urination, burning sensation during urination, and lower abdominal pain.Urinalysis: A clean-catch urine sample is collected in a sterile container and tested for the presence of bacteria, white blood cells (leukocytes), nitrites, blood, and protein. The presence of leukocytes and...
Urologic Endoscopic Procedure: Cystoscopic Examination
Meaning of Cystoscopic Examination:Cystoscopy is an essential diagnostic tool in urology that is used to assess the structure and function of the genitourinary system. It provides a direct view of the urethra, bladder, and, in some cases, the ureteral openings. This procedure helps detect structural abnormalities, infections, cancers, and blockages in the urinary tract. There are two types of cystoscopy:Flexible cystoscopy is commonly performed in outpatient settings due to its less invasive...
Appendicitis
Appendicitis is an acute inflammatory condition of the vermiform appendix, most commonly caused by obstruction of its lumen. The appendix is a narrow, blind-ended pouch that extends from the cecum, making it particularly prone to obstruction. Causes include fecaliths, lymphoid hyperplasia (often after viral infections), parasites, tumors, or foreign bodies. This obstruction initiates a cascade of pathological changes.Luminal Obstruction and Early InflammationAfter obstruction, normal mucosal...
