Summary

High-intensity exercise training significantly improved peak oxygen consumption and time to exhaustion in patients with intermittent claudication more than low-intensity training. Leg blood flow did not change with either training intensity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the effectiveness of high-intensity versus low-intensity exercise therapy for IC.
  • To investigate the impact of exercise intensity on leg blood flow during exercise in IC patients.

Main Methods:

  • 16 IC patients underwent 8 weeks of supervised endurance training.
  • Participants were randomized to training at 60% or 80% of peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak).

Main Results:

  • The high-intensity group showed significantly greater improvements in VO2peak (9%) and time to exhaustion (16%) compared to the low-intensity group.
