Summary

A subtotal gastrectomy successfully treated a stomach gastrointestinal stromal tumour (GIST) with malignant potential. Four years post-surgery, the patient remains disease-free without adjuvant therapy, demonstrating curative resection effectiveness.

Background:

Gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GIST) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract.
Malignant potential in GIST necessitates effective management strategies.
Subtotal gastrectomy is a surgical option for localized gastric GIST.

Observation:

An elderly female patient presented with a gastric GIST exhibiting malignant potential.
The patient underwent a subtotal gastrectomy for tumor removal.
Post-operative recovery was uneventful.

Findings:

Complete curative resection of the gastric GIST was achieved.
No adjuvant chemo-radiotherapy was administered post-surgery.
Four-year follow-up revealed no evidence of recurrent disease.

Implications:

Curative resection, even without extensive lymphadenectomy, can lead to long-term disease-free survival in gastric GIST.
This case highlights the potential efficacy of surgical management for select GIST cases.
Minimally invasive surgical approaches may be considered for GIST management.
