Background:

  • Acromioclavicular (AC) joint dislocations, particularly grade III, present a common challenge in orthopedic and sports medicine.
  • Optimal treatment strategies, operative versus nonoperative, remain debated for grade III AC joint injuries.
  • Understanding long-term functional outcomes and shoulder strength after conservative management is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the long-term functional outcomes and shoulder strength in male patients with grade III AC joint dislocations treated conservatively.
  • To compare strength metrics between the injured and uninjured shoulders using objective dynamometry.
  • To determine if conservative treatment results in significant functional deficits or strength impairments.

  • A cohort of twenty male patients with grade III AC joint dislocations was assessed.
  • Follow-up averaged 4.5 years post-injury (minimum 2 years).
  • Strength testing was performed using a Cybex II dynamometer across multiple planes (flexion, extension, rotation, abduction, adduction) at 60 and 120 deg/sec.

  • Subjective complaints were minor, with no impairment in daily activities or athletic participation.
