Beacon (BC) peptide is found in oxytocin and vasopressin neurons in rat brains, primarily associated with mitochondria. This suggests BC may function as ubiquitin-like 5, impacting hypothalamic neurosecretion.

Background:

  • Beacon (BC) is a 73-amino acid peptide initially identified in the hypothalamus of Psammomys obesus.
  • Understanding BC's function in normal rats and sand rats requires detailed study of its distribution and localization.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the distribution and subcellular localization of BC immunoreactivity (irBC) in the brain of Sprague-Dawley rats.
  • To determine the relationship between BC and key hypothalamic neuropeptides like oxytocin (OT) and vasopressin (VP).

Main Methods:

  • Immunohistochemistry and immunoelectron microscopy were used to detect irBC in rat hypothalamic sections.
  • Double labeling techniques with antibodies against OT and VP were employed to identify co-localization with irBC.
