Background:

  • It's hypothesized that IFC activation aids action understanding through simulation.
  • Direct evidence for IFC's perceptual role in action understanding is limited, with potential confounds from linguistic or motor functions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the causal role of the left inferior frontal gyrus in action understanding.
  • To test if the left inferior frontal gyrus is necessary for perceptual judgments of observed actions.

Main Methods:

  • Used repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to temporarily disrupt activity in the inferior frontal gyrus.
  • Administered rTMS over the inferior frontal gyrus during a perceptual weight-judgement task.
  • Included control conditions with rTMS over non-target sites and non-action-related perceptual tasks (judging ball weight, stimulus duration).
