Summary

Urine follicle-stimulating hormone (uFSH) measurements offer a non-invasive method to track the menstrual cycle's onset. This approach provides a simpler and more precise assessment of ovarian physiology compared to serum FSH (sFSH) blood tests.

Area of Science:

  • Reproductive Endocrinology
  • Hormonal Assays
  • Menstrual Cycle Physiology

Context:

  • The intercycle FSH signal initiates follicular recruitment but its timing and amplitude vary, making serum measurements difficult.
  • Current methods for serum FSH (sFSH) detection require frequent blood sampling.
  • Exogenous estrogen (E2) was used to control the intercycle FSH signal in this study.

Purpose:

  • To determine if urine FSH (uFSH) measurements can serve as a non-invasive alternative to serum FSH (sFSH) for monitoring the menstrual cycle.
  • To assess the correlation between uFSH and sFSH levels.
  • To evaluate the utility of uFSH in identifying the intercycle FSH signal.

Summary:

  • A pilot study in 21 infertile women demonstrated a strong correlation between urine FSH/creatinine (uFSH/Cr) and serum FSH (sFSH) levels (R=0.63, P<0.0001).

Related Experiment Videos

  • uFSH successfully identified the intercycle FSH signal in 15/21 patients, coinciding with sonographic evidence of impending ovulation.
  • The amplitude of the uFSH signal was approximately three times higher than its sFSH counterpart, facilitating easier detection.
  • Impact:

    • Urine FSH (uFSH) provides a reliable and non-invasive method for tracking key hormonal events in the menstrual cycle.
    • This simplifies monitoring of ovarian physiology and potentially ovulation prediction.
    • Facilitates more accessible and frequent assessment of reproductive health markers.
