Risk factors for developing metastatic infection from pyogenic liver abscesses

Diabetes mellitus and alcoholism are significant risk factors for developing metastatic infections from pyogenic liver abscesses. These underlying host conditions influence the spread of infection beyond the liver.

- Fever and right upper quadrant pain/tenderness were associated with non-metastatic abscesses.
Conclusions:
- Diabetes mellitus and alcoholism are independent risk factors for developing metastatic infections from pyogenic liver abscesses.
- Host-related factors play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of extra-hepatic spread from PLAs.
