This study found that diabetes mellitus is not a risk factor for open-angle glaucoma (OAG). Researchers examined over 3800 participants, and diabetes did not increase the likelihood of developing OAG.
Area of Science:
- Ophthalmology
- Endocrinology
- Epidemiology
Background:
- Open-angle glaucoma (OAG) is a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide.
- Diabetes mellitus is a common metabolic disorder with various systemic complications.
- The relationship between diabetes and OAG risk remains a subject of investigation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine if diabetes mellitus is a significant risk factor for the development of open-angle glaucoma (OAG).
Main Methods:
- A prospective, population-based cohort study involving 3837 participants aged 55 years and older from the Rotterdam Study.
- Ophthalmic examinations including intraocular pressure, visual field testing, and optic disc photography were conducted at baseline and follow-up.
- Diabetes mellitus was defined by medication use or elevated glucose levels; OAG diagnosis was based on optic disc and visual field criteria.
Main Results:
- Over a mean follow-up of 6.5 years, 87 participants developed incident OAG (iOAG).
- The relative risk of iOAG associated with diabetes at baseline was 0.82 (0.33-2.05).
- After adjusting for multiple factors, the relative risk of iOAG remained non-significant at 0.65 (0.25-1.64).
Conclusions:
- Diabetes mellitus was not identified as a risk factor for open-angle glaucoma in this population-based cohort.
- These findings suggest that diabetes does not contribute to the incidence of OAG.
