Background:

  • Human interferons (IFNs) are crucial cytokines with diverse antiviral and immunomodulatory functions.
  • IFN-alpha and IFN-beta are type I interferons, historically distinguished by distinct antigenic properties.

  • To identify and characterize previously unobserved antigenic structures shared between human recombinant IFN-alpha 2 (rHuIFN-alpha 2) and natural human IFN-beta (HuIFN-beta).

    • The antigenic distinction between human IFN-alpha and IFN-beta is not absolute, challenging previous assumptions.
    • The identified common epitope suggests potential for cross-reactive therapeutic antibodies or diagnostic tools.
