High numerical aperture (NA) hologram reconstruction algorithms are not new. We demonstrate maximal resolution in holograms with NA above 0.4, surpassing recent claims.

Area of Science:

  • Optics and Photonics
  • Digital Holography
  • Image Reconstruction

Background:

  • A recent letter proposed a high numerical aperture (NA) hologram reconstruction algorithm.
  • The proposed algorithm for high-NA holography is similar to existing in-line holography methods.
  • The reported NA of 0.17 is significantly lower than previously achieved and current standards.

Discussion:

  • This work critiques the novelty of a recently proposed high-NA hologram reconstruction algorithm.
  • It highlights that similar algorithms for in-line holography have been available for over a decade.
  • The presented NA values significantly exceed the reported 0.17 NA.

Key Insights:

  • Maximal achievable resolution is demonstrated for holograms acquired with NA > 0.4.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The presented work surpasses the NA values reported in the referenced letter.
  • Established algorithms provide superior performance for high-NA digital in-line holography.
  • Outlook:

    • Further advancements in high-NA digital holography can be achieved with existing techniques.
    • Exploration of advanced reconstruction algorithms for even higher NAs is warranted.
    • The focus should be on pushing the resolution limits beyond current capabilities.
