Background:

Increased hurricane intensity in the Gulf Coast disrupts peritoneal dialysis (PD) programs.
Patient relocation and treatment interruptions pose significant risks during natural disasters.

Purpose of the Study:

To describe the disaster planning, implementation, and follow-up of a peritoneal dialysis program in New Orleans post-Hurricane Katrina.
To evaluate the effectiveness of disaster preparedness for PD patients facing catastrophic events.

Main Methods:

Annual review and distribution of a PD disaster plan to patients.
Instruction on assembling disaster kits and identifying alternative dialysis sites.
Utilizing text messaging for communication and coordinating emergency supply shipments post-disaster.

Main Results:

A pre-Katrina tropical storm tested and validated aspects of the disaster plan.
Despite severe communication disruptions post-Katrina, text messaging facilitated patient contact.
Only 2 out of 22 patients required hospitalization, with both quickly recovering and continuing PD.

Conclusions:

Thorough preparation, practice, and communication are essential for PD patient safety during disasters.
Maintaining communication and planning for alternative care sites enable safe continuation of PD.
Effective disaster management strategies are vital for PD programs in hurricane-prone regions.
