Summary
Methenamine hippurate (MH) and cranberry tablets do not prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs) in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI)-related neuropathic bladder. This study found no significant benefit over placebo for either intervention in preventing UTIs.

- A double-blind, factorial-design randomized controlled trial (RCT) was conducted.
- 305 participants with SCI and neurogenic bladder were randomized to receive either Methenamine Hippurate (1g twice-daily), cranberry tablets (800mg twice-daily), or placebo.
- The primary outcome was the time to the first symptomatic UTI, with a 6-month follow-up period.

Conclusions:
- Neither Methenamine Hippurate nor cranberry tablets demonstrate a benefit in preventing symptomatic UTIs in patients with neuropathic bladder following SCI.
- Current standard regimens for managing neuropathic bladder in SCI patients do not appear to be enhanced by the addition of MH or cranberry for UTI prevention.
