This study reveals aquaporin-7 (AQP7) expression patterns in developing mouse brains. AQP7 is primarily located in the choroid plexus, suggesting a role in cerebrospinal fluid production during brain development.
Area of Science:
- Neuroscience
- Molecular Biology
- Physiology
Background:
- Aquaporins (AQPs) are crucial for water homeostasis and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) production in the brain.
- While AQP1, 4, and 9 expression is known, AQP7's role in brain development remains uncharacterized.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the spatiotemporal expression pattern of aquaporin-7 (AQP7) during perinatal and adult mouse brain development.
- To determine the potential involvement of AQP7 in brain development and CSF production.
Main Methods:
- Immunohistochemistry was used to visualize AQP7 distribution in developing mouse brain tissues.
- Semi-quantitative RT-PCR and Western blot analyses quantified AQP7 mRNA and protein levels.
Main Results:
- AQP7 immunoreactivity was predominantly observed in the choroid plexus (CP) throughout brain development.
- Increased AQP7 expression was noted in ependyma, pia, and blood vessels during perinatal to postnatal development.
- AQP7 mRNA and protein levels significantly increased during perinatal brain development.
Conclusions:
- This study provides the first detailed report on AQP7 expression patterns in brain tissues.
- Results suggest AQP7 is a key structural component of the choroid plexus and may play a role in CSF production during mouse brain development.
