Erythema infectiosum, caused by parvovirus B19, is a common childhood illness. This study details its frequency and clinical signs in children, noting a 2001-2002 outbreak with characteristic limb and cheek rashes.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Dermatology
- Infectious Diseases
- Virology
Background:
- Erythema infectiosum, also known as fifth disease, is a common childhood illness.
- It is caused by human parvovirus B19 and presents with characteristic rash patterns.
- Epidemics of erythema infectiosum typically occur cyclically, often during winter and spring.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the frequency of erythema infectiosum in children.
- To describe the clinical characteristics of erythema infectiosum cases.
- To analyze data from the Institute of Child and Youth Health Care, Novi Sad, between 2000 and 2004.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective analysis of clinical data from children diagnosed with erythema infectiosum.
- Data collection period: 2000-2004.
- Diagnosis based on clinical presentation and rash characteristics.
Main Results:
- Erythema infectiosum accounted for 0.23% of pediatric cases.
- A significant outbreak occurred from December 2001 to September 2002, peaking in April-May 2002.
- The most common clinical signs were reticular exanthema on limbs (100%) and cheek exanthema (89.74%). Average age was 7.38 years; females were slightly more affected (56.41%).
Conclusions:
- Erythema infectiosum occurred sporadically between 2003-2004 after a notable outbreak.
- Clinical presentation is consistent with literature, emphasizing limb and facial rashes.
- No complications were observed in the studied pediatric population.
