Insights
Heart failure (HF) is a primary condition of cardiovascular aging, disproportionately affecting older adults. Despite treatment advances, HF prognosis remains poor, posing a significant health burden.
Area of Science:
- Gerontology
- Cardiology
- Public Health
Background:
- Heart failure (HF) is a major consequence of cardiovascular aging.
- Its prevalence and incidence rise with age, impacting older populations significantly.
- HF presents a substantial societal burden due to mortality, morbidity, and healthcare costs.
Purpose of the Study:
- To highlight heart failure as a key disorder of cardiovascular aging.
- To emphasize the increasing prevalence and incidence of HF in aging populations.
- To underscore the persistent poor prognosis and societal impact of HF.
Main Methods:
- Literature review and synthesis of existing data on heart failure and aging.
- Analysis of epidemiological trends in heart failure prevalence and incidence.
- Examination of treatment advancements and their impact on prognosis.
Main Results:
- Heart failure is intrinsically linked to the aging process of the cardiovascular system.
- Older adults experience a progressive increase in HF prevalence and incidence.
- Despite therapeutic progress, median survival for older adults with HF remains under 5 years.
Conclusions:
- Heart failure is a critical manifestation of aging, demanding further research and improved interventions.
- The aging global population will lead to a dramatic increase in HF cases.
- Addressing the challenges of HF in older adults is essential for public health and healthcare systems.
Abstract:
Heart failure (HF) represents the quintessential disorder of cardio-vascular aging, reflecting the convergence of age-related changes in the cardiovascular system and other organ systems and the increasing prevalence of cardiovascular diseases at older age. The prevalence and incidence of HF increase progressively with advancing age, and HF imposes an enormous burden on society in mortality, morbidity, and associated health care costs. Despite major advances in treatment of HF over the last 25 years, the prognosis re-mains poor, with median survival rates of less than 5 years in older adults. As the population ages, it is anticipated that the number of older people with HF will increase dramatically over the next several decades.
