Area of Science:

  • Cosmetic Science
  • Materials Science
  • Dermatology

Background:

  • Limited data exists on sunscreen structure changes after skin application.
  • Understanding these changes is crucial for sunscreen efficacy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Analyze the microscopic structure of commercial sunscreens containing benzophenone-3 (BP-3).
  • Compare structures before and after 2-hour skin application.
  • Evaluate control formulations with and without BP-3.

Main Methods:

  • Microscopic analysis using light microscopy.
  • Photographic documentation of samples.
  • Examination of commercial and custom formulations before and after skin application.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Some sunscreens showed significant crystal formation post-application.
  • One lamellar emulsion sunscreen maintained structural integrity.
  • Control formulations also exhibited crystallization after application.

Conclusions:

  • Benzophenone-3 (BP-3) likely causes recrystallization in many sunscreens on skin.
  • Recrystallization may impair the UV light-absorbing capabilities of sunscreens.
  • Further research is needed to understand the implications for sunscreen performance.
