New nurses require essential informatics skills for patient safety in technology-driven healthcare settings. This study found limited informatics exposure in nursing curricula, potentially leaving graduates unprepared for electronic medical record systems.
Area of Science:
- Nursing
- Health Informatics
- Medical Education
Background:
- Healthcare increasingly relies on information technology for patient safety.
- Federal mandates require electronic medical records for all Americans.
- Nursing curricula must integrate informatics to prepare future nurses.
Purpose of the Study:
- Evaluate nursing informatics content within a baccalaureate (BSN) curriculum.
- Identify strategies to strengthen informatics competencies in nursing education.
- Assess BSN students' preparedness for information technology in practice.
Main Methods:
- Developed a research-based tool to evaluate course syllabi.
- Tool based on the informatics competence framework by Staggers, Gassert, and Curran.
- Analyzed syllabi for evidence of informatics learning experiences and knowledge competencies.
Main Results:
- Evidence of computer skills learning experiences was present in some syllabi.
- Students were not routinely exposed to computerized healthcare systems.
- No syllabi demonstrated comprehensive informatics knowledge competencies.
Conclusions:
- BSN students receive limited exposure to nursing informatics.
- Graduates may be inadequately prepared for information technology in healthcare.
- Recommendations are provided to enhance informatics integration in BSN programs.
