Area of Science:

  • Pharmacology
  • Toxicology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Adderall is a common treatment for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
  • Adderall is also subject to abuse, necessitating an understanding of abuse patterns.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe patterns of Adderall abuse calls to Texas poison control centers from 1998-2004.
  • To compare Adderall abuse calls with non-abuse exposure calls.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of drug abuse calls to poison control centers by year and location.
  • Comparison of abuse and non-abuse calls based on patient demographics, exposure location, and medical outcomes.

Main Results:

  • 12% of Adderall exposure calls involved abuse.
  • Abuse calls were more frequent among adolescents and occurred more often outside the home (e.g., schools).
  • Adderall abuse exposures were less likely to have no adverse effect and more likely to require healthcare facility management.

Conclusions:

  • Adolescents are a key demographic for Adderall abuse.
  • Adderall abuse is associated with higher risks of adverse medical outcomes and occurs in diverse settings.
  • Understanding these patterns is crucial for targeted prevention and intervention strategies.
