Oscillations In An LC Circuit01:31

Oscillations In An LC Circuit

An idealized LC circuit of zero resistance can oscillate without any source of emf by shifting the energy stored in the circuit between the electric and magnetic fields. In such an LC circuit, if the capacitor contains a charge q before the switch is closed, then all the energy of the circuit is initially stored in the electric field of the capacitor. This energy is given by
Oscillations about an Equilibrium Position01:04

Oscillations about an Equilibrium Position

Stability is an important concept in oscillation. If an equilibrium point is stable, a slight disturbance of an object that is initially at the stable equilibrium point will cause the object to oscillate around that point. For an unstable equilibrium point, if the object is disturbed slightly, it will not return to the equilibrium point. There are three conditions for equilibrium points—stable, unstable, and half-stable. A half-stable equilibrium point is also unstable, but is named so because...

Summary

Electronystagmography (ENG) can help identify leukoaraiosis in elderly patients experiencing vertigo and dizziness. Saccadic oscillations detected via ENG were significantly more common in patients with leukoaraiosis.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Otolaryngology
  • Geriatrics

Background:

  • Leukoaraiosis, a common finding in elderly individuals, is associated with cerebrovascular disease.
  • Vertigo and dizziness are frequent symptoms in the elderly, with multifactorial causes.
  • The relationship between leukoaraiosis and audiovestibular dysfunction requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate audiovestibular function in elderly patients with leukoaraiosis using a comprehensive test battery.
  • To determine the association between vertigo, dizziness, and the presence of leukoaraiosis.
  • To assess the diagnostic utility of electronystagmography (ENG) in detecting leukoaraiosis.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective study comparing 18 elderly patients with leukoaraiosis and 18 age/sex-matched controls with vertigo and dizziness.
  • Audiometry and electronystagmography (ENG) were performed on all participants.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used to confirm leukoaraiosis.

Main Results:

  • ENG revealed abnormalities in pursuit movements (72%), saccadic eye movements (28%), optokinetic nystagmus (44%), and caloric testing (56%) in the leukoaraiosis group.
  • Saccadic oscillations were significantly more prevalent in the leukoaraiosis group (72%) compared to the nonleukoaraiosis group (22%).
  • ENG demonstrated a sensitivity of 72% and specificity of 78% for detecting leukoaraiosis.

Conclusions:

  • Saccadic oscillations identified through ENG are indicative of leukoaraiosis on MRI.
  • ENG examination serves as a valuable screening tool for leukoaraiosis in elderly patients presenting with vertigo and dizziness.
  • Audiovestibular testing, particularly ENG, can aid in the etiological diagnosis of dizziness in the context of leukoaraiosis.
