Area of Science:

  • Medical Imaging
  • Oncology
  • Dermatology

Background:

  • Neurofibromas are benign tumors.
  • Diffuse neurofibromas can affect soft tissues.
  • Accurate diagnostic methods are crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize the sonographic features of soft tissue diffuse neurofibromas.
  • To establish sonographic criteria for identifying these tumors.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of seven pathologically confirmed soft tissue diffuse neurofibromas.
  • Review of medical records and histologic findings.
  • Sonographic evaluation of echogenicity, location, margins, and vascularity.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Lesions appeared as hyperechoic masses with interconnecting hypoechoic tubular/nodular structures.
  • All tumors were subcutaneous with poorly defined margins to surrounding fat.
  • Muscle margins were well-defined in 5/7 cases; vascularity varied.
  • Conclusions:

    • Soft tissue diffuse neurofibromas exhibit a distinct sonographic signature.
    • Sonography is a valuable tool for the initial assessment of these neurofibromas.
