Summary

A rare cerebriform nevus sebaceus case is presented in an 18-year-old boy. This finding highlights the infrequent cerebriform variant compared to the common linear type of nevus sebaceus.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Pathology
  • Medical Genetics

Background:

  • Nevus sebaceus is a congenital skin malformation typically presenting as a yellowish, waxy plaque.
  • It commonly occurs on the scalp or face and can follow a linear or systematized distribution.
  • While the linear variant is relatively common, other morphological presentations are infrequently documented.

Observation:

  • A rare case of cerebriform nevus sebaceus was identified in an 18-year-old male patient.
  • The cerebriform variant is characterized by a convoluted, brain-like surface morphology.
  • This presentation is notably distinct from the more commonly observed linear nevus sebaceus.

Findings:

  • The cerebriform nevus sebaceus represents a rare morphological subtype of nevus sebaceus.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Histopathological examination would be crucial to confirm the diagnosis and differentiate from other adnexal tumors.
  • The rarity of this specific variant underscores the diverse clinical spectrum of nevus sebaceus.
  • Implications:

    • Recognition of the cerebriform variant is important for accurate diagnosis and patient management.
    • Understanding the varied presentations of nevus sebaceus aids in genetic counseling and prognosis.
    • Further research into the pathogenesis of different nevus sebaceus variants may reveal distinct molecular mechanisms.
