    Summary

    Hydatid cysts in the kidney are rare, accounting for 3% of hydatid disease cases. Imaging, including MRI, can misdiagnose these cysts as renal tumors.

    Background:

    • Hydatid cyst of the kidney is an uncommon parasitic infection.
    • It represents approximately 3% of all hydatid disease cases.
    • Diagnosis typically involves imaging modalities like ultrasonography, CT scan, and MRI.

    Observation:

    • A case of a renal hydatid cyst in a 47-year-old male is presented.
    • The cyst mimicked a hypovascular renal tumor on imaging.
    • Even magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) posed diagnostic challenges.

    Findings:

    • Renal hydatid cysts can present as hypovascular masses on imaging.
    • Diagnostic imaging, including MRI, may not definitively distinguish hydatid cysts from tumors.
    • This highlights the importance of considering parasitic etiologies in renal imaging.
