Summary
Multiple cutaneous ganglioneuromas, a rare skin tumor in dogs, were identified in a Labrador retriever. These canine tumors share key features with human ganglioneuromas.
Area of Science:
- Veterinary Pathology
- Canine Oncology
- Dermatopathology
Background:
- A 3-year-old Labrador retriever presented with multiple small skin nodules.
- Initial examinations ruled out internal or endocrine tumors.
Observation:
- Cutaneous nodules were located on the thoracic wall, flank, and scrotum.
- Histological analysis revealed two distinct neoplastic cell types within the nodules.
- Mild inflammation was present.
Findings:
- One cell population resembled mature ganglion cells; the other consisted of small, spindle-shaped cells.
- Both cell types expressed vimentin, neurofilament protein, pan-neuronal neurofilament, amyloid-precursor protein, and chromogranin A.
- Spindle cells were also positive for 2', 3'-cyclicnucleotide 3'-phosphodiesterase.
Implications:
- The histological and immunohistochemical findings align with human primary cutaneous ganglioneuromas.
- This case supports the classification of these canine tumors as multiple cutaneous ganglioneuromas.
- Contributes to understanding rare canine skin neoplasms.

Sympathetic Pathways: Sympathetic Chain Ganglia
The sympathetic chain ganglia, also known as the sympathetic trunk ganglia or paravertebral ganglia, are a series of ganglia located bilaterally on either side of the spinal column. These ganglia serve as relay stations for the sympathetic nervous system. Preganglionic neurons originating in the spinal cord project their axons to the sympathetic chain ganglia. Within the ganglia, these preganglionic fibers synapse with postganglionic neurons. The postganglionic neurons of the sympathetic trunk...
Skin Diseases and Disorders
Skin is the first line of defense and encounters a variety of microbes. Some pathogenic strains are often the cause of a broad range of infections of the skin and other body systems. These conditions can affect people of all ages and may have different causes, including genetic factors, infections, autoimmune reactions, environmental factors, and lifestyle choices.
Gram-positive Staphylococcus spp. and Streptococcus spp. are responsible for many of the most common skin infections. However, many...

Peripheral Nervous System: Ganglia and Nerves
The Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) is a crucial component of the body's neural network, extending beyond the central nervous system (CNS) to bridge the gap between the CNS and the external environment. It encompasses nerves, ganglia, and sensory receptors.
Nerves
The nerve is a bundle of axons that serves as the communication highway in the PNS. Each nerve is ensheathed in a protective layer of connective tissue called the epineurium. This outermost layer safeguards the nerve and supports the...
