This study developed novel molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) for selective zinc (Zn(II)) ion solid-phase extraction (SPE). The developed MIPs demonstrate high adsorption capacity and reusability for efficient zinc ion preconcentration from complex samples.
Area of Science:
- Materials Science
- Analytical Chemistry
- Environmental Science
Background:
- Selective extraction of metal ions is crucial for environmental monitoring and chemical analysis.
- Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) offer a promising approach for targeted analyte recognition and separation.
- Developing efficient SPE materials for zinc (Zn(II)) ion detection is essential due to its environmental and biological significance.
Purpose of the Study:
- To synthesize and characterize novel MIPs for the selective solid-phase extraction (SPE) of Zn(II) ions.
- To evaluate the adsorption capacity, selectivity, and reusability of the prepared MIPs for Zn(II) preconcentration.
- To establish an analytical method for quantifying Zn(II) ions in complex matrices using MIPs-SPE.
Main Methods:
- Preparation of Zn(II)-imprinted polymers via copolymerization of 8-acryloyloxyquinoline (8-AOQ) and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) using 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) initiator.
- Solid-phase extraction (SPE) using MIPs beads for preconcentration of Zn(II) ions.
- Optimization of extraction conditions including pH and flow rate; assessment of selectivity against competing ions (Cu(II), Co(II), Ni(II)).
- Determination of adsorption capacity, detection limit, relative standard deviation (R.S.D.), and reusability over multiple cycles.
Main Results:
- Synthesized MIPs exhibited selective rebinding of Zn(II) ions after template removal.
- Maximum adsorption capacity for Zn(II) was approximately 3.9 mg g(-1).
- High selectivity for Zn(II) over Cu(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) ions was observed.
- Achieved a low detection limit of 0.65 µg L(-1) with an R.S.D. of 2.9%.
- The MIPs-SPE method demonstrated a linear response from 0.65 to 130 µg L(-1) and maintained adsorption capacity after 20 cycles with only a 3.2% decrease.
Conclusions:
- The developed Zn(II)-imprinted polymer material is effective for selective SPE of zinc ions.
- The MIPs-SPE method provides a sensitive, selective, and reusable approach for preconcentrating Zn(II) from complex matrices.
- This material shows potential for application in environmental and biological sample analysis requiring zinc ion determination.
