We developed new methods to precisely measure diffraction grating spacings using light wavelengths. These techniques offer direct traceability for nanometrology applications in the submicrometer range.

    Area of Science:

    • Optics and Metrology
    • Nanotechnology

    Background:

    • Accurate measurement of diffraction grating spacing is crucial for nanometrology.
    • Existing methods may lack direct traceability in the submicrometer region.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To introduce one- and two-wavelength methods for absolute measurement of diffraction grating spacings.
    • To establish direct traceability in the submicrometer region using wavelength standards.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilizing the Littman configuration for autocollimation.
    • Applying one- and two-wavelength interferometric techniques.
    • Measuring a grating with a nominal value of 2160 grooves/mm.

    Main Results:

    • The one-wavelength method successfully measured grating spacing.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Measured grating spacing was 463.16 nm with a standard deviation of 0.24 nm.
  • Demonstrated traceability in the submicrometer region.
  • Conclusions:

    • The proposed methods provide accurate absolute measurements of grating spacings.
    • These techniques offer direct traceability for nanometrology applications.
    • The methods are valuable for submicrometer measurements using wavelength standards.
