- B-mode ultrasonography was used to measure carotid and femoral artery intima-media thickness (IMT) and plaque frequency.
- Traditional atherosclerotic risk factors were assessed, and analyses were conducted separately for men and women.
Main Results:
- No significant differences in carotid and femoral artery plaque frequency or IMT were observed between Behçet's syndrome patients, ankylosing spondylitis patients, and healthy controls.
- Subgroup analysis of BS patients (mucocutaneous/joint disease vs. major organ involvement) showed similar atherosclerosis markers.
- Only men with rheumatoid arthritis exhibited a significantly higher frequency of carotid artery plaques after adjusting for risk factors.

- Elevated atherosclerosis is not a prominent characteristic of Behçet's syndrome, even in patients with major organ involvement.
- The findings suggest that BS itself does not confer a substantially increased risk for atherosclerosis.
