Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the safety of continuing anticoagulation therapy in patients undergoing vitreoretinal surgery.
  • To determine if preoperative anticoagulation requires modification for vitreoretinal procedures.

Main Methods:

  • Sixty patients (mean age 73) on anticoagulation therapy underwent vitreoretinal surgery.
  • Patients received either vitamin K antagonists (22) or antiplatelet agents (38).
  • Surgery proceeded with standard sub-tenon anesthesia, without altering anticoagulation regimens.

  • Only one patient experienced an intraoperative complication (subretinal hemorrhage requiring retinectomy) during a major procedure for retinal detachment.
