Background:

  • Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a serious eating disorder associated with high mortality rates.
  • Patients with AN are known to have an increased risk of suicide.
  • The Centre for Eating Disorders at Odense University Hospital manages approximately 140 AN patients annually.

Observation:

  • A review of five fatal cases of AN over a decade at Odense University Hospital was conducted.
  • None of the five deceased patients died by suicide.
  • Four out of the five patients died after discontinuing treatment.

Findings:

  • The absence of suicide as a cause of death in these severe AN cases is unexpected given the known suicide risk.
  • Compulsory treatment, shown to be effective for AN, was utilized in only three of the five cases.
  • Treatment dropout is a significant factor in mortality among patients with anorexia nervosa.

Implications:

  • This study highlights the critical issue of treatment dropout in anorexia nervosa mortality.
  • The findings suggest potential underutilization of compulsory treatment in severe AN cases.
  • Further research is needed to understand and mitigate mortality risks associated with AN, particularly concerning treatment adherence and compulsory admission protocols.
