Open Access initiatives can improve research dissemination. Free access to psychotherapy research increased article readership among mental health professionals, but only sometimes improved intervention recommendations.
Area of Science:
- Psychology
- Information Science
- Public Health
Background:
- The Open Access movement aims to increase research diffusion by removing access barriers.
- Effective dissemination of psychotherapy research is crucial for improving mental health practice.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate if Open Access (free access) to psychotherapy research articles increases their utilization by mental health practitioners.
- To determine if easier access to research influences clinical decision-making.
Main Methods:
- Two studies were conducted where mental health professionals received different types of citations (none, normal, linked, free access).
- Participants were asked to find and read the cited article.
- After one week, their intervention recommendations based on a vignette were assessed.
Main Results:
- Free access citations significantly increased the likelihood of participants reading the research article compared to other citation types.
- In one of the two studies, free access also increased the likelihood of making intervention recommendations aligned with the article's findings.
Conclusions:
- Removing access barriers through Open Access can enhance research readership among clinicians.
- While free access improves article discovery, its impact on translating research into practice may be variable and warrants further investigation.
