Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between allergies in humans and their pets.
  • To determine if pet allergies correlate with human atopic diseases like hay fever, asthma, and atopic dermatitis.

  • A nested unmatched case-control study was conducted on 4261 residents in Germany (aged 25-74).
  • Data on doctor-diagnosed human atopic diseases and veterinarian-diagnosed pet allergies were collected via standardized interviews.
  • Statistical analysis adjusted for age, sex, parental predisposition, and social status.

Main Results:

  • A significant association was found between human hay fever and pet allergies (OR 1.74).
