Goiter

Goiter refers to an abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland that may appear as a diffuse goiter (uniform enlargement) or nodular (single or multiple nodules). Functionally, it is classified as nontoxic (normal/low hormone levels) or toxic (excess hormone production).PathophysiologyDiffuse thyroid enlargement typically results from prolonged stimulation by thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) or TSH-like agents, commonly seen in hypothyroidism or iodine deficiency. Area of Science:

  • Head and Neck Surgery
  • Oncology
  • Diagnostic Imaging

Background:

  • Warthin's tumour typically affects the parotid gland.
  • Ectopic Warthin's tumour can arise in para-parotid and cervical lymph nodes.

Observation:

  • A 60-year-old male presented with a 3-month history of a smooth, mobile neck mass.
  • CT imaging revealed a cystic lesion in the right upper neck, separate from major salivary glands.

Findings:

  • Surgical excision and histological examination confirmed the mass as Warthin's tumour.
  • The lesion measured 8 x 4 x 3 cm.

Implications:

  • Ectopic Warthin's tumour should be considered in the differential diagnosis of cystic neck lesions.
