Interference and Diffraction02:18

Interference and Diffraction

Interference is a characteristic phenomenon exhibited by waves. When two electromagnetic waves interact with their peaks and troughs coinciding, a resulting wave with enhanced amplitude is produced. This is known as constructive interference. In this case, the two waves interacting are in phase with each other.

Area of Science:

  • Optics and Photonics
  • Metrology
  • Materials Science

Background:

  • Measuring high-velocity displacement of diffuse surfaces is challenging.
  • Existing methods may lack precision for rapid changes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To present a novel interferometric method for measuring diffuse surface displacement.
  • To enable detection of high-rate velocity variations.

Main Methods:

  • Utilizes interference between two light beams reflected from a moving surface at different angles.
  • Requires a light source with modest temporal coherence and ~100 mW power.

Main Results:

  • Successfully measures displacement of diffuse surfaces moving at millimeters per microsecond.
  • Enables detection of high-rate velocity variations.

Conclusions:

  • The presented interferometric method is effective for high-velocity displacement measurements.
  • Suitable for applications requiring precise tracking of rapid surface motion.
