Area of Science:

  • Minimally invasive surgery
  • Endocrinology
  • Surgical oncology

Background:

  • Adrenal gland lesions require surgical intervention.
  • Traditional open adrenalectomy poses risks.
  • Laparoscopic adrenalectomy offers an alternative.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of laparoscopic adrenalectomy.
  • To determine the indications for laparoscopic adrenalectomy.
  • To establish laparoscopic adrenalectomy as a standard of care.

Main Methods:

  • Review of laparoscopic adrenalectomy procedures.
  • Analysis of transperitoneal and retroperitoneal techniques.
  • Assessment of outcomes for benign and malignant lesions.

Main Results:

  • Laparoscopic adrenalectomy is suitable for most benign adrenal lesions.
  • Select malignant adrenal lesions can also be removed laparoscopically.
  • Both transperitoneal and retroperitoneal approaches yield excellent results.

Conclusions:

  • Laparoscopic adrenalectomy is a safe and effective procedure.
  • Few contraindications exist for the laparoscopic approach.
  • It should be considered the standard of care for benign adrenal lesions needing surgery.
