[Trichinellosis in Poland in 2006]

In the year 2006 in Poland a total of 130 cases of human trichinellosis were registered, 5 of which were individual cases. The remaining cases occurred in seven outbreaks. Two outbreaks were large and involved 257 exposed people of which 104 became ill. The source of the infection in most of the outbreaks was wild boar meat. In 2 outbreaks the infected products were prepared from pork and wild boar meat and in one of the outbreaks only from pork. The presence of Trichinella endemic areas in Poland determines the necessity of careful meat inspection for Trichinella spp.
