Reduction mammaplasty significantly improves self-esteem and functional capacity in women with breast hypertrophy. This surgical procedure also effectively reduces lower back pain, enhancing overall quality of life.
Area of Science:
- Plastic Surgery
- Quality of Life Research
- Psychosocial Health
Background:
- Breast hypertrophy negatively impacts women's physical health and psychosocial well-being.
- Reduced self-esteem and functional capacity are common complaints in women with large breasts.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the impact of reduction mammaplasty on self-esteem and functional capacity.
- To assess the effectiveness of surgical breast reduction in improving patient outcomes.
Main Methods:
- 100 women (18-55 years) with breast hypertrophy were randomized into reduction mammaplasty (Group A) or a control group (Group B).
- Self-esteem (Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale), functional capacity (Rolland-Morris), and pain (VAS) were measured before and 6 months after surgery.
- The control group received no surgical intervention during the study period.
Main Results:
- Reduction mammaplasty led to a statistically significant improvement in self-esteem (P < .001).
- Patients undergoing reduction mammaplasty showed improved functional capacity compared to the control group.
- Mean lower back pain intensity decreased from 5.7 to 1.3 on the VAS post-surgery.
Conclusions:
- Reduction mammaplasty is an effective treatment for improving self-esteem in women with breast hypertrophy.
- Surgical breast reduction enhances functional capacity and significantly alleviates lower back pain.
- The procedure positively impacts psychosocial outcomes and physical well-being.
