Abstract:
Several established populations with low allergy susceptibility have been identified and may be exploited for further evaluation. A variety of factors seems to offer some protection from allergy, including exposure to viral and/or bacterial compounds and restrictive use of antibiotics and antipyretics. There are probably more factors and mechanisms to discover, and the ultimate goal remains to identify a single/a group of protective factor(s) that might be employed for effective and safe prevention strategies in high allergy susceptibility populations. It should be noted, however, that the association of allergy prevalence and a loss of allergy protective factors described above seems to be more pronounced regarding respiratory allergy than other phenotypes of the atopic syndrome.
