Background:

  • The number of American College of Mohs Surgery (ACMS) fellowship positions has grown significantly.
  • This growth has led to an increase in fellowship-trained surgeons in dermatologic surgery.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare Mohs micrographic fellowship-trained surgeons (MMFTSs) with non-Mohs fellowship-trained surgeons (NMMFTSs).
  • To analyze demographic shifts and practice patterns within dermatologic surgery.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized the American Academy of Dermatology Practice Profile Survey (2002/05).
  • Conducted an analysis of recent Mohs fellowship classes.

Main Results:

  • In 2005, MMFTSs and NMMFTSs were equally represented in the workforce (ratio 0.9).
  • The youngest cohort (29-39) showed a higher proportion of MMFTSs (ratio 1.55) in 2005.
  • Younger MMFTSs were more likely to be female (47.1%) compared to all MMFTSs (24%).
  • MMFTSs were 5 times more likely to hold academic positions and performed 2-3 times more Mohs cases weekly.

Conclusions:

  • Demographic shifts in dermatology have created distinct profiles for MMFTSs and NMMFTSs.
  • Increased ACMS fellowship positions result in a greater proportion of MMFTSs among younger surgeons.
  • The impact of increased fellowship trainees on the dermatologic surgery workforce requires ongoing monitoring.
